java.sun.com have an interview with James Gosling, the ‘father of Java’, on the topic of open sourcing Java, what it means for Java, and for Sun.

The interview closes with the question “Is emacs still your favorite integrated development environment (IDE)?”, and Gosling replies “Oh, no. I switched over to the NetBeans IDE long ago.”. If that isn’t a solid endorsement for NetBeans I don’t know what is.

Canoncial, the company behind Ubuntu Linux, the distro that is currently attracting a large following due to the emphasis on ease of use and simple installation, has announced they will be distributing the Glassfish app server with Ubuntu.

Glassfish is the open source community effort to build a Java EE 5 compliant App Server. For more info see their project site here.

Don Brown has an interesting article on OnJava.com on the history behind Struts 1 (the original Struts framework), Struts Shale (based on JSF), and Struts 2 , which has been based on WebWork 2.

The majority of Solution Providers are still waiting for Java EE 5 support from the major vendors before starting to consider implementing new systems with EE 5 features. This article on InfoQ.com provides a good summary of where the major players currently are in terms of their announced support for EE 5 compliance. Noticibly falling behind is IBM which apparently will not have EE 5 support in Websphere until 2008.
